The Elf on the Shelf tradition involves a small elf figurine that is believed to visit homes during the holiday season, keeping an eye on children’s behavior and reporting back to Santa Claus. Families often come up with creative and playful ways to display Scout Elf each day, adding an element of surprise and excitement for the children. In this particular idea, the little guy is engaged in the domestic task of hanging laundry on a clothesline.
The Elf on the Shelf Laundry Room Idea
Step into the enchanting world of The Elf on the Shelf with our latest holiday-inspired idea that promises to sprinkle magic into your festive season! In this whimsical scenario, our mischievous elf friend has decided to take a break from his usual reconnaissance duties and indulge in a bit of household chores – laundry day! Imagine a miniature clothesline adorned with elf-sized clothes delicately hung using tiny clothespins. The red and white baker’s twine is playfully tied to two bottles of detergent, creating a whimsical scene that will captivate the imagination of both young and old.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how parents can set up this laundry The Elf on the Shelf idea:
Materials Needed:
- The Elf on the Shelf Doll
- Miniature clothesline (red and white baker’s twine)
- Two bottles of detergent
- Elf-sized clothes (tiny shirts, pants, socks, etc.)
- Miniature clothespins (we used these)
- Optional: small laundry basket
Steps:
- Gather Materials: Collect all the materials needed for the setup. Make sure the clothes and clothesline are appropriately sized for the Scout Elf. Barbie clothes fit or you can grab some The Elf on the Shelf clothing items.
- Set Up the Clothesline: Stretch the red and white baker’s twine across a designated area. This could be between two shelves, cabinet handles, or any other suitable locations. We chose to tie each end securely to bottles of detergent to create a miniature clothesline.
- Attach Clothes with Miniature Clothespins: Use the miniature clothespins to hang the elf-sized clothes on the clothesline. Hang the clothes randomly to make it look like Scout Elf is in the midst of hanging his laundry. You can use a variety of clothing items like shirts, pants, socks, and even a tiny pair of elf-sized underwear for a playful touch.
- Position the Elf: Place The Elf on the Shelf near the clothesline, as if it’s actively engaged in the laundry-hanging task. Consider using the miniature laundry basket as a prop, either placing it near the little elf or incorporating it into the setup.
- Add Details: Enhance the scene by adding small details like a tiny laundry detergent box next to the North Pole friend or a pretend clothespin bag. You can also use a few miniature items like miniature socks as if they fell off the clothesline.
- Create a Backstory: If you like, come up with a creative story or note to leave for the children explaining why the red elf is doing laundry. Perhaps Scout Elf decided to wash its clothes after a busy day at the North Pole.
- Position for Discovery: Place Scout Elf in a location where the children will easily spot it in the morning. Ensure it’s within their eye level and is easily visible.
The laundry room is a fun hiding spot for your Scout Elf. Remember, the magic of The Elf on the Shelf lies in the creativity and imagination of the setup. Have fun with the details, and enjoy the delight it brings to your children during the holiday season!

What is The Elf on the Shelf?
The Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a Scout Elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of Scout Elf’s visits. The little red guy visits each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The North Pole Visitor has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror, or hanging from the lights. It is a very important rule, that Scout Elf is not touched each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family can name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve.
