Teens are the best age group for birthday party games. They understand the rules, they are really competitive and they offer a good alternative to getting in trouble. The games have to be challenging enough to keep the teens engaged, but not so difficult that they get frustrated and give up. The key is to find games that are just the right mix of silly and challenging. That’s where we can help.
Let’s talk about teen party ideas including ideas for venues, party foods and of course, teen party games!
Planning Teen a Teen Party
If you’re planning a party for teens, the first step is to come up with a theme. Teens love a good theme and themed parties don’t mean you have to get dressed up and decked out. It can be anything from a glow-in-the-dark party, or pool party to a scavenger hunt.
Once your teen party theme idea is established, you want to get to planning. Here are a few basic steps for planning the actual party:
Choose a date and time
Teens tend to be busy, so it’s important to pick a date and time that works for everyone. The best times for teen birthday parties are in the afternoon or evening. Calculate the hours. How long can you busy a teen before they just go berserk?
You can see some of our favorite teen party digital invites (in our photo scavenger hunt blog post.)
Pick a location
The location of the party will depend on the theme. The games can take place inside out outside, just make sure you have enough room for movement.
Examples of teenage birthday party locations include…
- Skating Ring
- Movie Theater
- Backyard
- Public Park
- Escape Room
- Trampoline Park
- Basketball Court
- Go-Cart Track

- Warehouse
You can save money on the party by hosting the at your house, in your backyard or at a local park. If it’s a public park, see if the county requires you to rent a pavilion for special occasions.
Decide on food and drinks
You simply cannot have a teen party without proper food and drinks. Ask the teenagers what their favorite snack foods are beforehand! However, if you are on the search for cheap food for a teenage party, buying pizza, drinks, and lots of candy and chips is likely enough. You might have fun adding in some cute birthday party foods that might involve a little more effort. Decide on party food that fits them or set up some food stations like something you might have at a backyard movie night.
Example easy party food for teenagers include…
- Pizza
- Chips
- Candy
- Soda
- Brownies
- Tacos
- Hotdogs
- Chicken Wings
- Cookies
- Fruit
- Popcorn

Pass the Orange
This is a classic party game with a twist. All you need is an orange and a group of willing participants. The goal of the game is to keep the orange from hitting the ground. You can do this by passing it around, but you can only use your chin. Split into multiple teams just make sure that each team has an equal number of players. The first team to drop the orange loses. This game causes you to get extra close… kind of like a fun twist on spin the bottle close only without kissing! This circular relay race contest might not be best for a church youth group!
How to Play: For this game, split players into two teams. Get an orange and sit everyone in a circle, or stand in a line. The game is simple: you need to put the orange under the chin of the first person, who must then pass it to the next person and place it under their chin, without using your hands. The first team to finish wins.
Supplies: Oranges.
Donuts on a String
This kids game is sure to bring out the laughter. You’ll need some donuts and string for this one. The object of the game is to eat the donut without using your hands. The first person to finish their donut wins! Prizes include extra donuts or just the declaration of being the winner!
How to Play: Tie the string on the donuts (one for each guest) and hang them from a clothes line, curtain rod or anything that is available. Each player stands beneath a single donut. On the mark of ‘go’ the players begin to eat their donuts using only their mouth. The first player to finish their doughnut wins.
Supplies: Donuts, string, something to hang from.
Lawn Twister
This is a classic game with a twist. All you need is some spray paint, an open space, and maybe a tarp. Play the game everyone loves, but outside! This game is tons of fun and brings back childhood nostalgia. You can twist it up by adding some shaving cream to each circle. Try not to slip! Now this is one of those teenage party fun games everyone will love!
How to Play: Use spray paint to paint the various circles needed to play the popular lawn Twister game. You can use the twister board from the board game or just have caller who calls out various commands. If you have enough space inside, you can spread a piece of tarp and paint the colored circles on a piece of tarp.
Supplies: Twister mat, twister board, tarp, spray paint.
Marshmallow Pong
This is a take on beer pong, but non-alcoholic. You’ll need some plastic cups and instead of ping pong balls, use marshmallows. The goal is to bounce the marshmallow into the other team’s cup. If they catch it, you get a point.
How to Play: This fun teen game is played like adult beer pong, only teen-friendly, with marshmallows. Line Six cups in a pyramid or triangle shape on opposite sides of a table/area. Each team takes a turn throwing a marshmallow into the other team’s cups. Once a marshmallow lands in a cup, the cup is taken away and the opponent then eats the contents of the cup (if not dirty.) There is no winner. Everyone is a winner for eating the prize – marshmallows.
Supplies: Plastic cups, marshmallows.
Worm Pie
If you love a good 60 second game, this one is it. It also makes the best photos for a teen party. Get ready to get messy trying to hunt the gummy worms lost deep in the whipped cream pie.
How to Play: Give each player a pie tin filled with whipped cream and ten hidden gummy worms. With their hands behind their back, players have to try to find the all the gummy worms in the pie taking the gummy worm out and placing it in a bowl beside their pie tin.
