Teacup Mother’s Day Card Craft

Who doesn’t love the chance to celebrate Mom? (And as a mom myself, of course I’m totally unbiased!) Regardless of how much I love having a special day dedicated to moms everywhere, kids get so excited to express their appreciation and love for their moms, too. If your house’s day-to-day activities get as hectic as mine do, you’ll know there’s just not much time typically to stop and say how much we appreciate each other.

I know you all love our Mother’s Day resources as much as I love the holiday — one of our more popular posts is our Mother’s Day Preschool Crafts. Since you all loved those curated Mother’s Day craft ideas, we wanted to come up with something creative and craft our own Mother’s Day Card Craft! This Teacup Mother’s Day Card Craft is for a tea-rrific mom! I mean, whose mom doesn’t love relaxing with a hot cup of tea? Best of all, it’s simple and easy for the kids to create on their own or with Dad’s supervision. This Mother’s Day Card Craft uses upcycled egg cartons, scrapbook paper, and pipe cleaners. Even with it’s humble supplies, this Mother’s Day card for kids looks so impressive. Mom is sure to appreciate all the crafting work that goes into this special Mother’s Day craft!

Supplies:

1 Cardboard Egg Carton
Watercolor Paints
1 Sheet White Cardstock Paper
2 Sheets Patterned or Colored Paper (scrapbook paper)
1 White Pipe Cleaner
2 Pipe Cleaners, any color
Hot Glue Gun
2 Tea Bags
Scissors

Directions:

1. First, cut 2 pieces of cardstock about 4”x 6” in size and cut 2 pieces of patterned/colored paper about 3”x 5” in size. We used white card stock and colored scrapbook paper.

2. When you have your paper cut, center each piece of patterned paper on top of each white piece, and glue down on them. These are your two cards.

3. Grab your egg carton. Use the bottom part of the egg carton and cut 2 of the egg holders from the end of the egg carton. Cut off one side of each egg holder, making sure to leave the other 3 sides intact. When you lay it down on the flat cut off side, it will look like a little round cup.

4. Once your teacups are cut, use the watercolors to paint each little egg holder cup any color you choose, we used blue and purple. Let these dry for a few minutes.

5. While your tea cups are drying, cut 2 pieces of the white pipe cleaners each about 3” long. Cut 1 piece each of the colored pipe cleaners about 3” long. Twist a white piece with each colored piece so you now have 2 pieces that looked striped.

6. Make each one into a small handle shape and glue each one to the egg holder cups. I glued one end on the inside top, and the other end to the outside so they look like cup handles.

7. Glue each teacup with the flat cutout side down onto the cards. Put one of the tea bags into each little cup and let the string dangle over it.

These make cute cards for Mother’s Day or anytime! They would be SO fun for a tea party, too!

It’s a common saying that water and oil don’t mix, but do your kids know exactly why? Even without a full explanation, your little ones will love trying out this fun kids’ science experiment with water and oil! As a former teacher, I am all for easy science experiments that let kids learn about science at home. With that being said, this is a fantastic science experiment for elementary school teachers, too! Teachers shouldn’t have to pay extra for engaging activities for their students, and simple activities like these make everyone a winner.

The great thing about this oil and water experiment is that it’s both incredibly easy and that you probably have all the ingredients in your house already! Oil and water are incredibly inexpensive and easy to get a hold of. All you need for this fun kids’ science experiment are a few colors of food dye, water, cooking oil, eye droppers, and beakers or cups. Straws work too if you don’t have eye droppers on hand!

Letting your kids experiment with science at home doesn’t mean you have to spend extra on supplies. Pique their interest in the science field with an easy experiment that’s both informative and simple to create. They will love getting to perform this hands-on experiment, and the extension component allows them to learn the explanation of the experiment in simple terms that are made for kids. Your kids will feel like expert scientists when they get to perform this oil and water experiment! Enjoy!

How do you explain the oil and water experiment to kids?

Put simply, what’s happening is that the molecules of water can’t mix with the molecules of oil. Even if you try to shake up a bottle of half-oil and half-water, the oil just breaks up into smaller droplets, but it doesn’t truly mix with the water. Only the food coloring mixes with water. The oil will stay completely separate! Plus, the oil will always float on top of water because oil is less dense. This experiment is a great way to begin a discussion about density and how liquids interact when they are mixed together.

Oil and Water Experiment

Supplies:

Cooking oil
2 cups water, divided
Food coloring
Straws or eye droppers

Directions:

Fill up a small jar or bottle with cooking oil (it’s fun if each kid has their own!).
Place 1/4 cup of water in 4 separate containers.
Dye each water filled container a different color with just a drop or two of food coloring and mix.
Set your straw (or eye dropper) into one container of colored water, place your fingertip over the top of the straw, and drop the colored water into the oil by lifting your fingertip off the straw.
Watch how the oil and colored water droplets separate.

Explanation and questions for the oil and water experiment:

Oil and water separate when combined because water is denser than oil. It causes the colored water droplets to sink when added to the jar of oil.

Encourage your kids to play around with this experiment. Ask them further questions including, when combining different colors do they seek to join together? Do they seem to seek to join together more over time?

Explain density and ask your kids or students which is denser, water or oil? (The oil floats, showing that it’s less dense than water.)

When I think about all the exciting experiences I had in school, it doesn’t matter how long I’ve been out of the classroom — it sparks a passion in me to pass that love of learning onto my kids. One of my favorite ways to do so is to find the best fun science experiments that I can share with my children. Rather than them spending their time behind a screen, these fun experiments for kids are a productive use of their time. Since they’re so quick, they’re super easy for mom to put together. With three kids, I’m always pressed for time and I always have my hands full. I cannot believe I am putting this post together. As many of you know, almost a year ago (December 2017), my husband and I were blessed with twins. Twins are hard enough but these two happened to be the cherries on what was already a “larger” family. You see, these boys added numbers four and five to our mix, making us Langston Party of Seven. I began planning for a larger first birthday. This was because the twins birthday is very close to Christmas (December 22) and I figured it was knocking two birds with one stone when we visited Florida. Getting the family together for Christmas and also for a one year old birthday celebration.

The First Year

I began researching ideas. Camo never came to mind. In fact, neither of us being hunters, it was very low on the list. My husband then stated, “Hey, let’s make this birthday about us. We survived the first year.” His phrase stuck. We survived and instantly the baby birthday celebration took on a whole new meaning, the survival of the first year for my husband and I.

We Survived
