If you have been with us a long time, you know we are obsessed with The Elf on the Shelf. In fact, we have been giving you Elf on the Shelf Ideas all season long. That is almost 60 days (all November and December) for five years. Five years, this year! That is a long time and a lot of ideas! However, 300 Elf on the Shelf Ideas doesn’t stop me. In fact, there are so many creative ideas out there my brain is not shy of new inspiration that i can’t wait to share. The most popular Thanksgiving Food Craft, the flexibility of this food craft is nice. How much you want to go with this cookie is up to you. You can have a stand up turkey or a lay down turkey instead. Add left over Halloween candy to spruce up the design or keep it simplistic with icing and candy corn.

On the show we made these with chocolate peanut butter cups but you can also do with caramel cups. Pick up store bought frosted fudge cookies and glue on the top of the hat to make the perfect little snack for your little Pilgrim.

Family activities solidify healthy family relationships. As you begin to gather your fall family bucket list this season, be sure to add these Family Traditions for Fall.

While your kids are in the home, it is important to create Family Traditions. This can be done with the change of seasons and the change of activities available in one’s area. Family traditions are a set of activities you repeat within a family. Tradition make each family unique as they are experiences that not every family will have. When you combine family traditions, you create your own unique family blueprint.

As the temperatures drop and the leaves begin to turn, try some of these fall family activities. They can be done alone, with your immediate family, or you can incorporate a few of these fall ideas with the company of others like at a Friendsgiving Gathering.

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

For the kids that love to be hands on, pumpkin patches are traditionally set up for guests to walk around and pick up their own pumpkins. They can be found in cities (perhaps in a church parking lot) or in the country, visit a pumpkin farm. If you are able to get a a “real” pumpkin patch, it create a learning environment for your kids to see pumpkins are not always found on the shelf but first begin from growing on a vine.

Go to a Fall Festival

Our favorite fall festival is Cox Farms, year after year. Look for an event that has a corn maze, hayride, burlap slides, petting farms and more. It might be a day trip away from the city, but doing something out of the norm creates the most vivid memories.

Go Apple Picking

One of our favorite things to do is to go apple picking. In late August, September and early October, there’s no better way to take in the beautiful time of year than an afternoon spent in the apple orchard of a little farm, away from the hustle and bustle of the produce aisle in the supermarket. The fall adventure makes for some amazing photos!

Apple Baking Day

Apples certainly make for great healthy snacks all by themselves, however, fall is the time to begin baking. If you find yourself with a surplus of apples, bake as much as you can and consider gifting the extra baked goods to neighbors, teachers, friends and more. Carve a Pumpkin

Carving a pumpkin is the All-American fall traditions. It is best done at the end of October so the pumpkin does not rot before Halloween. Play Fall Games

Host a game day. This can be a larger event where you invite friends and family or it can be a family game night where you create the most intimate memories among your immediate family. The best thing about fall game parties, is you can keep the house clean and free of germs choosing to host outside.

Get your neighbors involved with a friendly game of boo-ing. Boo your neighbors by going to their front door. Dropping a treat or bag of candy and running just after ringing the doorbell. Thanksgiving Tree

One of the best things to do every fall is a taking a gratitude challenge. This can be done through a nightly dinner conversation in a 30-Day Gratitude Challenge or you can create a Thanksgiving tree. Put a few dry branches in a vase and have everyone add hanging leaves (made from construction paper) with messages of thanks.

Cook with Pumpkin

When the first leave falls, the flavors of pumpkin are everywhere .Teach your kids to enjoy the mixture of cinnamon and squash with pumpkin recipes. You can create your own pumpkin recipes from scratch or bake easy pumpkin recipes with these canned pumpkin recipes -pumpkin recipes form breakfast to dessert and everything in between

Volunteer

In a season of giving thanks, be sure to also give back. Paying it forward is as much a gift for someone else as it is for you. Find a service project you can commit to for the season such as creating fall turkey kits or homeless kits. Volunteering provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Plus, intrinsically, it gives to you just as much as it gives back to someone else!

Decorate for Fall

Pull at your fall decorations or get to the Dollar Tree and buy some new ones. There are many low cost Fall Décor Ideas for decorating the home. Don’t’ forget your child to decorate their little corner of the home, their bedroom.

Have a Bonfire Night

Gather some firewood and get ready to have a bonfire. A family bonfire can take place on an overnight camping trip or in your own backyard. Try different and unique S’mores recipes as well as these campfire cones – your kids will love them and their hands will be free of sticky marshmallows.

Fall Foliage Drive

As the leaves begin to turn, take a Scenic Drive. This can be a day trip or a weekend trip to the mountains. Our family has rented a cabin in a state park and visited caves, had picnics and walked a few trails. Keep in mind the colors of the leaves in the mountains with change a lot faster than most cities. What is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf. The elves return to their home (Santa’s North Pole Work shop) every Christmas Eve. An Elf’s Story can also be found on DVD.

Parenting doesn’t come with a manual but this loving words for kids printable will help as a parent aide. Learn about your child’s love language and instantly download these words of encouragement for kids to build self esteem and intrinsic self affirmation.

While parenting is not linear and sometimes a + b does not always equal c, it is nice to have a guide to remind us how to parent well and how to parent form the heart.

The Five Love Languages

What are the Five Love Languages? Whether learning about the heart of a spouse or your kids, author Gary Chapman teaches us there are multiple ways to fill the loved tank of our family members. The “5 Love Languages include Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch. You can learn more about your love language, your spouses love language and your child’s love language by taking a Love Language Quiz.

Inside every child (and adult) there is an emotional love tank. Focusing on filling your child’s love tank allows them to find fulfillment in the home instead of looking for it elsewhere and in the wrong places. It is important that parents learn how to love children and that can easily be done with a prompt providing loving words of affirmation for kids.

What are some good words of encouragement for kids?

Wouldn’t it be great if parenting came with a manual? After five kids I still am trying to figure things out. Of course, each new age comes with challenges too, so just when you have things somewhat in a good flow, a hiccup occurs.

While, there is no parenting manual, we hope this loving words printable will be a visual reminder for encouraging your kids. I personally hung my words of encouragement printable in the medicine cabinet of my bathroom. This gives me a daily reminder of my tongue and how I can encourage children with words.

These encouraging words for kids include the following phrases…

I’m glad I’m your mom (or dad!)
My day isn’t complete without a hug from you.
I admire your hard work!

Children often want the simplest of things. They want to be loved, appreciated, and cared for. Through words of affirmation, you can show your children you love them, not only through actions, but by saying what they are longing to hear. Taking the time to voice your love builds strong, self-confident kids who know how to express their love to others.

Notice that these phrases above have I/my statements. In addition to making personal statements, try changing some of these phrases by replacing with alternative pronouns. Teach your children to have pride in themselves so sometimes their reward is intrinsic instead of external (form you.)

For example, try these replacement phrases to increase intrinsic motivation words of encouragement for kids…

Words of affirmation for kids

Try these messages of positive things to say to kids with these intrinsic self affirmation phrase.

Instead of “I’m proud of you” try “You should be proud!“
Instead of “I admire your hard work” try “You worked very hard to _____“
Instead of “You did great” try “You came up with a thoughtful solution and really nailed that math problem.“

Play with these sentences and try to change them a little by adding specific and descriptive comments to signal you have paid attention and you really care. See how your child’s self esteem grows and if your words are effective in promoting desired behaviors.

Discipline Through Words of Affirmation for Kids

While the word discipline and the phrase words of affirmation don’t seem to go hand and hand, it is possible to discipline your child through their love language. Our words of affirmation printable does not include discipline. However, I do want to share with you a resource we use in our home. Don’t Make Me Count to Three by Ginger Hubbard.

If you loved Gary Chapman’s The 5 Love Languages of Children, look at this book companion. In the book Don’t Make Me Count to Three, Ginger Hubbard encourages and equips moms to reach past the outward behavior of their children and dive deeply into the issues of the heart. Instead of feeling discouraged or angry, look at poor behavior as an opportunity to grow the word of God on your child’s heart.

Heads up, spankings are used in this book, so adapt what you want to your own parenting style. While I am a former teacher and have studied Conscious Discipline (no spanking) this book taught me a lot about tying my discipline to the heart and the word of God. In fact, I was missing the book a lot time and asked my husband where it was. It was in his backpack as he was reading it during his free time. I didn’t even prompt him to look at the book I had picked up on Amazon a few weeks prior.

Wise Words for Mom

Not into chapter books? I encourage you to pick up Wise Words for Moms. We have this hanging by our calendar in our Family Command Center. You can use this companion without the book, it really is a must for using words of affirmation and scripture during discipline.

Wise Words for Moms is a calendar-sized chart, designed to aid you in using the Scriptures to drive out the foolishness that is bound up in the heart of [your] child (Proverbs 22:15). It is a tool for your personal research of the Bible for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training your children in righteousness.

I have been squatting on something. I have been so excited to share something new with you that I have been working on it (for what feels like) forever, I eventually finished with it and then I became too frozen to share.

Without further wait, here it is… The Busy Mom Binder!

This is a binder you won’t loose. It will be considered your home bible (lowercase). The place that holds all your answers and resources. A binder that you can reference frequently or lead others to reference when they have questions. You guys, it took us out of the struggle. Away from survival mode and it turned me back in to the old me I once knew – an organized woman in her home, within her family, and within her life! The woman before five kids!

Before the binder began, my favorite Busy Mom Quote actually came from a man (laughing), Ed Wiley was my spirit animal because he summed my life, best.

It’s so true, you guys. I am not sure what “it” is, but I assure you that whatever it is, it WAS NOT getting done. After our fourth and fifth children were born (twins), it was survival mode. Their first birthday party was even a survival theme. The party wasn’t for them, it was for mom and dad (my husband and I). While we didn’t hold a second birthday party, year two had us surviving, as well. Once they turned two, I felt like I began to re-organize my life… really, to reorganize our family’s life. Consider it my 2020 New Years Resolution (only I don’t typically make conscious resolutions.)

Recommended Accessories for Your Binder:

There are a few optional accessories for your home organizer. You may want to laminate your toy bin labels. We have had this Scotch Brand Laminator for years and it has held up very well. I also used an Avery white 1.5 inch 3-ring binder with clear cover (in my video), though I would recommend a 1 inch.
