Do Advent Calendars go to 24 or 25?
Well first let’s address this common question. How many numbers does an Advent Calendar have? There answer is 24 as you will begin a calendar on December 1st and end on Christmas Eve. The goal of an Advent Calendar tradition is to count down the days UNTIL Christmas. However, it’s not uncommon for you to have the number 25 as some want to also celebrate the advent calendar season on Christmas day too. You do, you. 24 or 25, both Advent calendar recognition the anticipation of Christmas, aka the birth of Christ.
What you need to make a DIY Advent Calendar
You don’t have to be an expert woodsmith to make an advent calendar. You can quickly put together this Christmas countdown by grabbing a few supplies around your home and downloading our free stickers. This is a fun Christmas craft to do with the kids. In addition to the nativity, it quickly tells the story of Christmas as you anticipate the birth of Jesus.
Supplies
If you are a crafter, it’s easy to pull together this homemade advent calendar. Grab many items from your craft supply closet.
The items including in this DIY Sticker advent calendar include…
- brown paper bags
- card stock/paper or sticker sheets paper
- 1.5 hole punch
- scissors
- twine or string
- Christmas washi tape
- glue stick or glue
- mini clothes pins
- mini ornaments
- free Christmas advent calendar printable (see below
The best paper bags are mini kraft paper bags though you can use brown lunch bags too.
Directions
String the twine of choice across in a length to fit 24 bags. I used a wooden picture frame and measured one string across my frame to see how many bags would fit on each row – in my case, I could get 6 bags on a row for a total of 4 rows.
Place your treat/gift in your bags and fold. Place Washi tape down the center for decoration.
Stick (sticker paper) or glue (card stock paper) number on bag. We prefer the bags in numerical order, but you make a random collage of numbers out of order.
Clip each bag to your twine/string with clothes pins. Start another row.
Decorate with mini ornaments or perhaps fun Christmas lights.
Tips: Depending on what you are placing inside the bags (weight) you may need to use push pins or something more secure to hold the string on your surface. A nice suggestion would to use a framed cork board behind your frame.
Ideas for Advent Bags
Each advent bag will have a small treat or prize in side. Consider candy or a special note for your child to allow screen time or dinner alone with mommy, a trip to the dollar store etc. In the spirit of the holiday you could write scripture for your child to look up and reflect on with a treat.
