If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know I’m a fan of Dave Ramsey’s approach to financial freedom: To get out of debt the same way you learned to walk—one step at a time! Dave has taught the principles of managing and budgeting your money, getting out of debt, building wealth, and living in financial peace to millions via radio, books, Financial Peace University, live events and online.
Dave Ramsey’s mission to help others learn how to get out and stay out of debt began in 1992, after losing everything himself. He wanted to learn everything he could about money so that it could not control him ever again and teach others to do the same. At first he offered counseling to others going through financial loss. A short time later, his radio show began and he wrote his first book, Financial Peace. Now he has more books, a whole array of educational series, including the well-known Financial Peace University (FPU), a TV Show on Fox Business Network and still runs the radio show, now called The Dave Ramsey Show.
His proven method is to use the Seven Baby Steps starting with a small emergency fund and then snowballing that debt. There are so many resources for families, including budgeting and tracking worksheets online, free with My Total Money Makeover subscription. But I love that there are also products to help parents teach our children about money. Dave believes it is so important to give these future adults a great foundation so that they hopefully will not make some of the same mistakes many of us have made. He also has products and seminars directed toward helping businesses operate with integrity and without debt.
Dave’s desire to provide common-sense education and empowerment which gives HOPE to everyone from the financially secure to the financially distressed is felt every time he is on the air!
Some of his great tools include:
Kids Monster Pack ($49.95): it is always good to start good habits early. The Kid’s Monster Pack will start showing your children how to handle money from a young age. Kit includes Financial Peace Jr., all 6 of Dave’s illustrated kids’ books, plus the NEW Junior’s Adventures 6 CD Audio Set.
Financial Peace University Lifetime Membership ($109): Kit includes Full-Color FPU Workbook, High-Quality Audio CD Library with all 13 lessons, Durable Envelope System (my favorite), Financial Peace Revisited book, a lifetime membership (you and your spouse can attend an FPU class anywhere, any time, at no extra charge!) and more!
Starter Pack ($49): The Total Money Makeover Book, Money Answer Book, Cash Flow Planning DVD, Dumping Debt DVD, Designer Red Envelope System and Dave’s Budgeting Software (CD-ROM).
6 Month Subscription ($59.70): Your “how-to” place online! Site includes tools, baby steps outline, Dave’s show (commercial free), and forums for discussion with other community members.

The best financial tip I have been given over the years is that whenever making a big purchase, make sure you and your spouse are on the same page. Men are often able to bring some wisdom about the purchase and women bring some discernment to the discussion. Making sure you do things together and have a peace about every financial decision you make, big or small.

Budget for everthing. For example, we have an account just for “Gas” and we pt about $300/month in it. We use a wal-mrt credit card and get 3 cents off every gallon at all Murphy USA’s. At the ed of each month we pull the total due onour card fromour gas account to ay it off. If we only spent $275, we keethe extra $25 in our gas account and put another $300 in the next month. So, wen we go on vacation or use more gas than expected it doesn’t affect our monthly budget becase theextrais already there.

This would be a welcome gift in my house. Having been laid off for two years and living from our savings and credit cards to be able to have a guide to getting back on track the right way would be great. Our family had to relocate to a new state for jobs for both my husband and myself, which it a blessing to be able to have found jobs. This set would help us pay down that debt that was incurred while unemployed and begin to build our savings back. Thank you for another awesome give away !
I think the most useful financial advice I was ever given was by my dad….
He told me that I should pay for “everything but one item a month, in cash. The one item a month that you put on a credit card need to be something that you can pay off with a check, in full, the next month.” This allows me to have credit (should I ever need to borrow it in the event of an unforseen emergency) while being responsible as well.
How do I (a woman in my 20’s) keep from charging everything like most of my friends? My credit card is frozen in a block of ice. Seriously.
My dad took a plastic milk quart and filled it with water half way and froze it. Then, he cut a slit at the top of the quart large enough to slip the credit card through. When the card fell on the block of ice (already in the container, half way full) he filled the rest of the container with water, up to the slit. He then returned the container to the freezer, creating a block of ice with my card in the middle.
If I want/need the credit card, I need to take it out of the freezer and melt the ice to get the card out. That gives me about 30 minutes (or 10 with a blow dryer) to figure out if I REALLY need that item I want to charge.
Sounds crazy, but totally works! I’m hoping to be able to restrain myself and not need a block of ice within the next few months. :D
Amy says
The best piece of financial advice I was ever given was to actually track my spending and monitor it on a regular basis. Once I finally broke down and started doing this, I was shocked to see how much money was going to interest fees, late fees, postage to mail bills that could be paid online, and convenience items — candy, drinks at every store I stopped at, etc. It was amazing! With a little work I was able to eliminate $300 a month in those areas and send it straight to savings! Shocking!

Cash for my groceries helps me tremendously. My husband and I took his financial peace class about four years ago and really liked the teachings. My best financial tip is to DOWNSIZE and GO WITHOUT! We were living the “American Dream” but didn’t like the “keepin’ up with the Jones'” treadmill. We refocused on what was important in life and spent a year giving away 2/3rds of our material items and downsizing from a 3500sqft home to a cozy 900sqft one. It creates more family interaction, is easier to clean, and helps us value what we have since we don’t have space for things we don’t love.

My ex-husband had brought a lot of debt into our marriage. Revolving debt. It was a gift of Dave Ramsey’s audiobook that really helped us get out of the financial mess in a quick and orderly fashion. The most important tip I learned is to snowball your payments. Once you have paid off one bill, add the amount you were paying into the next. Things will get paid off VERY quickly and suddenly you will begin to see the surface.

My favorite tip would be to make a budget and stick to it. That and also not paying interest for anything other than a house mortgage and NO late fees for anything! If you can’t return rented videos, books, tools, or pay your bills on time, then all of those late fees you incure are really a waste of money that could be used towards other much needed items.

Tip: Keeping our emergency money in only $100 dollar bills. That way it needs to be a true emergency for us to break those $100 bills. It’s not so much about keeping the numbers in the budget tabulated its the behavior that makes you spend money you don’t need to. So for us, this trick works. Thanks for the great giveaway!!!!

My best financial tip is to choose an organization you’re passionate about and donate to that on a regular basis. We give a portion of our paycheck to our church every month, and while it doesn’t contribute to our own savings it reminds us to hold on to “things” lightly…a lesson I too easily forget when we stop giving.

Financial Tip: even if it’s just $5 a month (ours is $20-$40 depending on cash flow), budget money for you and your spouse to each have your own stash to “treat” yourselves to a soda, some fries, a shirt, whatever way you choose to. It’s freedom with restraint! :)

I love Dave’s tip that you should have 1 saver in the household and 1 spender. If you have 2 spenders – you are broke. If you have 2 savers, you don’t have any fun. There needs to be a balance. I tend to blend both by planning lots of bargain / cheap / coupon filled ‘staycations’.
Lisa says
My tip would be to stop using credit cards and get them paid off. Then only spend what you have. We try to use all cash now and not even use our debit card much. It helps so much! Cash is hard to spend, so you spend less!!

My favorite financial tip: prebuy grocery gift cards and make that your food budget for the month. We actually buy ours through our church (they get 5%), so it feels good to ‘give’ to the church. This helps keep us financially responsible and not overspend or buy unneeded junk food simply because we are hungry!
Cassie says
If you can’t pay cash, you don’t need it so don’t buy it!

My best tip is to set a realistic family budget. My husband and I have an annual date night in January, where we map out the big stuff for the year ahread…weddings, vacations, house improvement projects, etc. We usually goe therough a bottle (or two!) of wine but end up much better prepared for the curveball expenses.
We need to do a better job with nour monthly budget.
Tracey Bridges says
Pay your credit card balance in full each month – ours is bank drafted for the full amount so I can’t even consider paying a lower amount.
Jean Felder says
I think the best budget tip is NO credit cards/interest. My husband and I followed the Financial Freedom book 10 years ago. I’m happy to say that we have no credit cards and no car payments (since they are now 10 years old :o) I think the children’s series would be such a blessing to teach our 3 children these important fundamentals while making it fun and on their level.

For me the best advice, but hardest to live by is to not spend money on credit cards if you can’t pay them off at the end of the month. All the coupons in the world won’t make up for the interest that is tacked on after you finally pay it off.

When I was young and my mom was teaching me to budget, she told me that it was not smart to budget all of your money away and not leave a little wiggle room for things you love (books, movies, etc.) If you do not leave room for purchasing these things, you wind up spending that money anyway and blowing your budget. So I always leave room for books in my budget!
