Supplies
- The Elf on the Shelf Doll
- Marker
- Scissors
- 9×12 Construction paper (various colored paper)
- Tape
- Optional: paper cutter
How do you make a paper countdown chain?
To make paper chains, start with one piece of construction paper. Lay the paper vertical and cut a strip every 2 inches. This will give you a total of 6 pieces per sheet of 9×12 construction paper. Repeat for the next color.
You can decide how many paper strips to make. For our example, we used 15 to hang Elf on the Shelf from the ceiling fan and 3 to countdown the days until Christmas.
Being with the first loop. Connect two ends together and tape them to create a loop. Get the next strip and loop it through the first loop. Connect so two chains are connected. Repeat this pattern alternating colors until you have a chain length you are happy with.
Connect the top loop to the top of the fan with tape. Drape your chain over the blades. Carefully insert Elf into the bottom loop of your chain.
Next make the countdown part of your chain. Add numbers to count down the days. In our example, we started with one and counted down to 3 to create 3 days of chains to take off as your child count downs the days until Christmas.
In order to hold on to those countdown paper chains, you want a wired Elf on the Shelf doll that can bend. You can do that easily with our no-sew bendable Elf on the Shelf directions. You can also tape Elf’s arms until the countdown to Christmas paper chain.
