If you are like me, you take your garbage bags seriously. You likely settle for nothing less than strong (no pun intended) name brands like Hefty. When Hefty asked me to take their kitchen challenge, I said sure. After all I have been through the highs (I bag that holds a lot and doesn’t smell) and the lows (bags that break on the floor when being removed and house a strong odor.)

My challenge began with the Hefty Cinch Sak – Tall Kitchen Bags. I noticed they were white (my number one choice for the kitchen), had STRONG drawstrings, and a thick liner. I could pack this bag!…and that is what I did. I packed it with a LOT OF TRASH!

Two thumbs up. When bringing the bag out of the can, the odor was minimal and the bag stayed in tack. I was able to tie it tightly and securely so that the bag made it to my garbage can and would not allow any loose garbage to fall!

    My worst garbage experience would have to be when I was tossing the full bag into the dumpster and it twisted and came back down almost landing straight on my head! Between the snuff spit and coffee grounds, I may not have ever felt clean again! Thankfully none of it got in my hair!

    I’ve got a good one. And it was with Hefty too. I went for the “cheaper” hefty bags, just the run of the mill hefty kitchen bags, instead of the drawstring. Plus this particular box came with a lot in them. The first 2 I pulled out completely tore at the seams, trash everywhere. I wrote Hefty a letter and they responded by sending me 2 free boxes of my choice. That was a “sour” deal that sure turned sweet!

    Had dinner and a birthday party. Got ready to take the trash out that containede ice cream and what we had for dinner went all over my carpet. It was so embarassing because I had to clean it up and ask my guests to move to the kitchen while I cleaned it up.

    I only buy Hefty. I once bought some cheaper bags to save money. I was taking one out my back door and down the steps and the thing split at the seams. It wasnt even full. So I had to pick up the yucky garbage and then shower again because it was just nasty. By then I was late to work. I wont buy cheapo garbage bags again. It isnt worth it!

    My worse garbage experience? Stinky dirty diapers in the outside trash can that smelled so bad the neighbors complained! lol So need the odor blockers!

    I had bought some cheap trashbags and after cleaning out the fridge for the week……took out the bag which I had of course stuffed lol it broke all over the floor…..after that no more cheap and thin trashbags for me……..

    I was about 7 or so my mom changed the cat box and told me to take out the garage. So I did and IT was very heavy for me at 7 so it got dragged and put down a little so it got holes in it and and spilled from one end of the drive way to the other.

    I tried to save money and use the store-brand garbage bags… (Don’t many “bad” product stories start that way?!) I began to clean out the fridge that had been ignored for a bit due to a sickness that plagued my entire family. Knowing not to pack it too tight, I discarded ONLY a bowl of vegetable soup and a couple of take-out containers. Apparently one of those containers caught the bag just wrong, ripping it and spilling veggie soup EVERYWHERE! I vowed then never to pinch pennies when it cane ot garbage bags. And the money I saved by buying the cheaper bags? Yeah, I wasted it, as I then had to mop, and mop, and mop again, to get rid of the soup on the floor. *sigh* Only brand-name bag for me from now on!

    I havent really had a bad garbage bag experience that I can remember, I know that sometimes they get a small hole and liquid leaks all over the floor thats the worst Ive experienced. I guess I can count my blessings =)

    Honestly the Worse experience with a trash bag would be when i pulled the bag out of the can and didnt know the dogs, my dogs, ate a hole in it, so when i picked it up to take it out – yup a mess! ugh! Really? thanks dog! haha

    Worse garbage bag experience probably was heavy food items like watermelon and the bag tore open with a lot of yucky, stinky mess to clean up afterward requiring 2 more trash bags.

    My worst experience with garbage bags happened a couple of weeks ago. When I lifted the garbage bag out of the trash can, the top broke. I managed to lift it all out just to find out the bottom was leaking. I made a trail of garbage from my kitchen to the back porch, where I had to take that bag and toss it outside. I walked around the house and put that now-busted-open-leaking bag into the trash container. Way too much trouble just to dispose of the garbage.

    some one put broken glass in a garbarge bag, and while carrying it out, the glass cut my leg, requiring stitches..ugh! happened as a small child.

    My worst garbage bag experience is when the can gets overfilled, and when you try to get the bag out, you get the streeeettttching . . . and then the bag comes apart and garbage goes everywhere. Yuck!

    I am an inventor in the Kitchen and I made my veggie chicken soup too spicy. No one would eat it. It got pushed to the back of the frig for who knows how long. I found it one day pretty smelly so i trashed it. No problems, right? Well the first pull on that cheap bag and it was all over my kitchen floor. I had to mop and sanitize the floor and do an extra load of laundry to clean all the cleaning rags, UUUUGGGGG!

    My husband takes out the trash, so fortunately I haven’t had a catastrophic garbage experience. We do use Hefty, so I know when the garbage goes out there’s no chance of the bag breaking and spilling onto the floor. That would be tragic since we have an 18-month-old who is into EVERYTHING!

    My worst experience:

    I cleaned out the refridgerator (and it was LONG overdue!) When the bag was full, I pulled it out of the garbage can and took it out to the garage. On the way back in, I saw a wet trail of garbage juice from the kitchen all the way outside! GROSS!!

    Taking the trashbag out of the can and setting it on the floor, part of the bag was on my foot. When I finished tying the bag and lifted it, my foot was soaked with juice from food. Yuck!

    My worst garbage bag experience has to be when I had a bag full of soiled dipers that exploded on the way out of the house GROSS!!!! I though I was going to die of the smell!

    MY worst experience is having three kids in diapers and a puppy whose tall enough to pull trash bags out of the garbage. I spent my morning up to my eyeballs in frozen poopy diapers!

    My worst trash bag experience is when one of the kids puts a non-empty can or bottle of drink in it! I go to drag it out of the can and there is this wet mess! Of course then you have to wash the stupid trash can and the floor because the mess has dripped across that too!

    My worst trash bag experience was when I had just taken the bag from our diaper pail and emptied the little box. I put them all in a Glad trash bag and was carrying it through the house to the garage. The bag caught on one of my daughter’s toys and split wide open dropping dirty diapers and dirty litter everywhere. To make matter worse, my daughter thought it was sand to play in!!!

    I once forgot that I had a chicken carcass in my trash bag and put it on the porch for hubby to put to the curb the next morning. The neighborhood cats got into it and made a mess which I had to clean up (use another bag) and take the garbage to the curb myself when I was done.

    My worst garbage experience was pulling the bag out and leaving it on the floor for my son to get. When he picked the bag up it was dripping liquid on the floor. Upon further inspection I realized it had been leaking for awhile. It was in the trashcan, puddled up on my floor and when my son RAN out the door with it, he left a trail for me to follow him! My baby thought it looked interesting so she decided to go step in it while I am trying to mop up the trail and WHAM she lands flat on her back and is covered in the mess! We figured out that my husband had put old oil in a bottle with no lid. He states he “sat it down correctly” in the trash can. That was it for me and cheap bags!

    I have one in diapers and keep a 6 month old little boy so our garbage is usually full dirty diapers. Would love to have something to get rid of that smell when you open the lid.

    I was lifting a cheap garbage bag out of the kitchen garbage can and our 7 month old at the time was on the floor. As I walked to the back door to take it out the garbage it broke and fell on the floor near the baby. He crawled right over and started playing in it before I could get to him and move him. It was not pretty.

    The worst garbage garbage (yes, I said it twice, because it *was* a piece of garbage) bag experience I think I’ve had was one of those non-stretchy kind, you know, the kind that split when you just look at it? I had emptied a really nasty litter box into the bag and was walking it through the house to take out, and the bag decided to burst open and OH LOVELY, disgusting used litter all over my living room carpet :(

    My worst garbage bag experience is when I was running late for work and had to take the trash out to the street because my dear hubby forgot to; on my way out, the trash bags started leaking some funky smelling stuff and by the time I was at the end of my driveway it busted open all over my new suit!!!!!

    Dollar Store Trash Bags. I filled a trash bag full of stuff from my refridgerator using a dollar store trash bag. When i pulled it out of the trash barrel it exploded all over the kitched floor… an hour later i was still cleaning up the gooey, wet mess.

    I hate garbage bag mishaps. The worst for me was the heat of summer, combine stinky toddler diapers and watermelon rinds (and all the sticky juice)and cheap garbage bags, throw in cream colored carpet and imagine the mess. Something punctured through the bag and a trail of smelly sticky juice all the way through house to curb. Paydirt for ants, headache for my day.

    My worst experience was when we had people coming over and didn’t have time to take the trash out. So I put the bags in the garage. Eventually I put the dogs in the garage. You can imagine the fun I had trying to hide that mess when a friend wanted to see the dogs. They had torn into all the bags and strewn garbage all over the garage. It was everywhere. Pretty gross since the cat litter had just been emptied.

    My mother in law came down for a visit and I cleaned like a mad woman to make sure the house was spotless. I forgot one thing, diapers were in my garbage and well my mother in law noticed the second she walked in the door and asked what that smell was. I was SO embarrassed!! I should have been using Hefty with odor block!

    my worst experience is filling up the bag w/yard trash including our doggie doo, when I went to pick it up, there was a hole in it and it all fell on my foot–BARE FOOT COVERED IN DOGGIE DOO, STICKS, LEAVES & DIRT!!! yuck!!

    after canning tomatoes, I emptied the garbage only to have the bag leak all the way to the front door (tomato juice & chunks). as I lifted up the garbage can lid, the bottom of the bag broke & most of the tomato skins fell out on the porch. yuck!!!!

    I hate the “yuck” in the bottom of my trash. Although it is not a disaster, it is sure annoying! I like a strong bag that does not fall off the rim of the can, so the yuck can’t fall in the bottom!

    The apartment complex where I lived last year sent out a notice that littering had become a problem and they would be charging $50 each time they caught someone. That afternoon I sent my son to take out the trash. Brilliant young man, but not so advanced in the common sense area at his age. I don’t think he realized that $1 per roll trash bags are not the most sturdy. Needless to say, the bag broke open about halfway to the dumpster. He left it lying all over the ground, not bothering to inform me so I could help him take care of it. A little while later, I had to make a soup run for my other son who had the flu. When I first saw the mess I was embarrassed for the poor resident who would get fined for the accident, but then I recognized some of it. My cheeks burned and I thought I was going to die from my own embarrassment. I ended up picking up some pretty disgusting things. Right then I decided my sanity and well-being was much more important than saving a few bucks. There are just some things you can’t sacrifice, no matter the budget. I haven’t bought lesser quality bags since!

    My worst garbage bag experience would have to be when I assigned my son to take the garbage out. There was a hole in the bottom of the bag, which he claims he didn’t notice…he left a trail thru the kitchen to the back door then all the way to the garbage can. I can’t believe he didn’t notice the bag was getting lighter!

    We have a store brand box of trash bags that have gone untouched for over a year because the first time we used one, we ended up with cat litter and kitty presents all over our floor. I hate to throw them away so they just sit on our shelf collecting dust!

    My worst garbage experience is pretty typical. I am carrying the bag throughout the house to the front door when I realize it has leaked some fluid and leaving a trail. Nice.

    My worst garbage bag experience was when the power was out in my area for almost a week during a HOT muggy summer and having to clear out my stocked freezer of all my packaged meats. And even though everything was well wrapped and in freezer bags everything still leaked – it was a bloody and stinky mess and then when trying to lift the garbage bags up out of the trashcans they completely gave way and my entire kitchen and dining room (And my legs!!) were covered in a gross stinky blood meat mess (with the temperature close to 100°F!) – that was truly horrible and it seemed like at the time that there was not enough bleach in the world to get rid of the smell!

    My worst garbage bag experience was when I worked at a gas station and a guy puked in our trash can and when we pulled the full bag out it busted and there was a nasty mess to clean up…. :(

    I’m with you on having strong bags. We tried a store brand one once that was supposed to be leak proof. Some liquidy things from the fridge got dumped in there, and once we went to take it out of the can, we discovered the bag had a hole. Yuck. I’ll do store brand for a lot of things, but not garbage bags.

    Worst experience was cleaning out the fridge when I shared a house with 3 other girls in college. We of course used the cheapest trashbags we could find, plus had way too much old food in the refrigerator. Needless to say we packed the bag full, and then dumped all of the nasty food on the floor, where our 4 dogs proceeded to try to lick it up. Gross. I’ve used Hefty ever since!

    Wow this is so cool. I just now came in door. After I dropped my kids off at school this morning I went to Wal Mart to pick up a few things and I picked up a box of Hefty trash bags was number one on my list of things we needed. There was a coupon on box and I love these bags because they have an odor blocking thing to them but it does not smell
    I bought a box of garbage bags before and was not pa ying attention they had some kind of odor stuff with them too. So I was using them and kept noticing some horrid rank smell. Well guess what it was those bags. Never again will I buy them.

    I don’t know that I have a horrible experience, other than having to dig through the trash for something that was not suppose to be thrown. But I do have to say that a problem in our house is smelly trash. I do not like to take the trash out unless it is packed full though either!

    I love Hefty garbage bags….especially their odor block ones! With kids in the house, there’s plenty of opportunity for garbage bags to have their downfall. Hefty has not let me down yet!

    Worst experience happened when I was using cheap bags……friends on their way over, trying to take out the trash before they got there. Bag leaked all through the house on the way to the outside trash can. Messy!!

    My worse garbage experience was one of those cheap store brands and I went to go take the trash down the hallway and was in a hurry and it tore in two and dirty diapers and food EVERYWHERE……..Ughh! Thats why I like Hefty now!

    My worst is leaky bags. I used to clean the office where my husband worked for extra money, taking out the trash was always the last thing I did. One of the times, I was dragging out the trash across the newly mopped floor and I realized it had left a trail all the way from the back of the office to the kitchen. I was scrubbing carpet forever and mopping tile again!

    Worst garbage is the bottom ripped out as I was taking it outside and it had left overs in it and I had to fight off the dog and my toddler son to clean it up as well as get a new bag. Was not happy at all!!!

    My worst garbage bag experience happened when I was 12. My mom bought the least expensive bags she could find, so things were always poking holes in the bags. I was taking a much-too-heavy garbage bag down to the road, and the lid to a tin can cut the bag of my leg open! I still have a terrible scar!

    My worst experiecne was when I was younger and left the garbage bags sit out for a few days in the hallway between the kitchen and our garage. Upon taking the bag to the garage, I noticed old, gross garbage was spilling out through a few small holes. Turns out a mouse had gotten into the garbage and had carried some away with him.     I work for an event venue… The worst garbage bag experience is when the raccoons tip over all of our cans and shred the bags…and their contents!

    I don’t really have a bad tale to tell but I do hate when they leak. It drives me bonkers when my husband pulls the bag out then sets it by the door to take later and it has leaked who knows what all over the floor. Ick!!!

    My worst garbage experiance sadly happens often when the dogs get into the garbage. They did so today, the larger dog got into it, and the Chihuahua *helped* by ripping apart foil. I expect *sparkly* poops sometime later today! :O

    My worst experience has been when something tore the bag as I pulled it out of the trash can. I had old grease and stinky food all over the floor. We quickly grabbed another bag and put it in there so we could take it outside. It was very nasty!

    Worst experience – I was about 2 months pregnant, and bought a scented odor block brand. I couldn’t figure out why I was getting morning sickness ONLY when I entered my kitchen…. the smell of the bags was making me sick!!!! I’ve had lotsa yucky blowouts, and leakages, but I really think the smell of the scented bags every morning for a couple of weeks before I made the association was the worst! That’s why I love the unscented odor block!!!!

    Worst garbage experience. The bag was really heavy and full after Thanksgiving dinner and the greasy turkey bones and fat broke through the bag onto the kitchen floor. So gross to clean up and stinky!

    One of my kids had put a slushie in the garbage and didn’t put it inthe sink. Needless to say the bag broke and I had sticky in my pantry and clear across the floor in the kitchen before I knew what had happened!!

I once bought cheap bags to save money and ended up losing my precious time cleaning up the inside of the garbage can, the floor, the walls around the garbage can and the leaky line it left all the way to the garbage can outside!     I don’t know that I have a super bad one, but I use bottle liners for my daugheter’s bottle and those often fall out of the bag or spill….old formula along with diapers just make for a nasty smell :/

    My worst garbage experience was when living in an apartment and I had taken my trash out to the dumpster then later that night called my mom to say thanks for the card she had sent. She asked about the $50 in the card and I said “what $50?” Since I really needed that money I was out digging for my trash bag in the dumpster then going through it for that envelope. Thankfully I found it with the $50 but yuck! I do check all envelopes now!

    We collected sand dollars on the beach one day, left them in a trash bag in the car overnight on a hot, HOT day. The car smelled like rotten dead funky fish so bad the next day, we had to drive around with the windows wide open so we could breath. What made it worse was, the bag had a hole so the rotten dead funky fish smelling liquid leaked out on to the carpeting, so even after the bag was disposed of, there was still that smell!

    I had put a big plastic cup full of room temperature bacon grease in the trash. The bag got a hole in the corner as I was pulling it out of the trash can and I didn’t realize it. There were grease drippings from the kitchen through the living room (on carpet) all the way out to the garage. Niiiiiccceee.

    I remember once preparing chicken and throwing the raw meat and juices into the bag and than when I pulled it out of the garbage can, the bag tore and all the meat and juices spilled onto me and my cloths. Talk about ick.

    Money is really tight after my husband was laid off for 9 months. We decided one thing we should save on is the price of trash bags so we bought some at the dollar store. Huge mistake! We always used Hefty before this and we will never stray again. We couldn’t even get those horrible “bags” out of the trash can and they leaked all over our wood floors. I’ve learned there are at least two things in life you shouldn’t skimp on. Toilet paper and Trash bags!

    This is my terrible garbage bag experience.
    I was using the cheap garbage bags because I was single and money was tight. One night about 2am I heard this noise outside my bedroom window.. It sounded like someone was outside. I quickly called 911 and said online while they were sending the police. They asked me if I had a gun and I told them yes. They told me to go ahead and get it. They also asked me to walk around the house and peek out the windows and see if I could see the intruder. I was so scared but did as they asked. I couldn’t see a thing. I saw the police as they pulled into my drive and and hung up with 911. I could see the police looking around my house then they came to my door. When I answered it, he said I think we see your intruder. He held his bright flashlight out into my yard as a huge dalmation dog ran off. I said, “Are you serious?” They just laughed.. That crazy dog and pulled my big trash can over and was going through my trash! Those cheap trashbags made it so easy for that dog to get into them. I had trash all over my yard.. From that day forward, I never bought cheap trashbags and I alway chained my trash cans up.

    Forgotten about, until the stench overtook my whole house during the day while I was at work, plus a hole in the bottom of the bag that left raw chicken juice over the inside of my can, which meant a good bleaching for it.

    My dog got sick on the carpet. I cleaned it all up and proceeded to fill the garbage bag with all the full waste baskets from the whole house, so I could take the bag to the dumpster. The bag got caught on the door knob on the way outside. I had barf to clean up again, along with coffee grounds, orange rinds and the rest of the trash.

    Our worst garbage bag experience occurred when we used generic bags to cleanup after our cat’s litter boxes. Unfortunately, we got what we paid for, and the bags ripped open in our driveway (thank goodness it didn’t happen in the house). That is why i am brand loyal to Hefty (especially the steelsak variety), their bags are the strongest and offer the best odor control.

    I try to buy garbage bags with cinch close but I ran out so I used regular garage bag and my husband decided he didn’t need to tie the bag while taking it out but guess what? Our son grabbed at him and he dropped the bag. YUCK! I made him clean it up. Now I always buy cinch close bag!

    Worst experience ever, been gone on vacation for about two weeks; didn’t get to clean out the fridge before we left like i had planned. :( Emptied out all the moldy runny leftovers and rotten vegetables into the garbage and proceeded to pull it out of the can. Well, my can was a little small and the bag overflowing and full. It ripped right down the sides and all over the garbage can and floor. Had to take that nasty thing outside and hose it down :( Not good at all

    I once had an alcohol laden party and the bags were leftover (beer). I took out all the bags in the morning but a tree branch pierced the bag as I was walking to the bin and the beer contents spilled over my work clothes. blargh!!!

    I had three children in diapers, plus litter box trash in the bag, plus some unknown liquid substances all in the same trash. Apparently there was a quarter sized hole in the bag which leaked all over my kitchen and on the carpet on the way to the front door. So since I noticed the leak, I just put it outside the front door on the porch to clean up the mess before the kids could get into it and make it worse. As I was doing this, apparently a racoon thought that the trash seemed like an interesting prospect. By the time I got done and went to take it to the can, it was all over the front porch and one of the single most disgusting things I have ever seen. I had to have hubby get a pressure washer.

    Okay so stinky diapers are bad but when you have 4 babies in daipers at the same time all with the stomach bug… needless to say the smell is bad enough to bring tears to your eyes. Now have a great husband who is trying to help and overstuffs the bag, pulls it out and does not realize the seam has torn and drips “stuff” through the house on his way out to the trash cans. I have to confess all the babies were not mine. We had good friends visiting at the time and they were kind enough to go rent a carpet scrubber.

    We have 2 kitties, needless to say, we have 2 litterboxes. When we clean out the litter boxes, we just use the current trash bag which fills it up and take it out. When I cleaned it, the trashbag broke on the way out to the trash can. It was not pretty.

    This is going back to the teenager days! We had a dog, a huge dog, who was not well trained. Our house was on a hill, and the trash was at the top of the hill, about 30 ft from the back door. So while lugging an already breaking and leaking bag up this hill, my 100+lb dog breaks from her chain in the yard and comes to attack the trash bag. I don’t know if even Hefty would have stood up to that dog! We ended up picking up, by hand, remnants of the trash and dumping it into the dumpster. One reason that I told DH before I married him that the trash is his job! lol

    I wast tight on cash one day so I decided to skimp on the trash bags and get the cheap kind with no drawstring. OMG that was BAD idea. Those bags last forever and never stay in place in the trash can (not to mention I cant fill them too much for fear of breaking). My husband and I call them the bad bags and we are still trying to get rid of them!

    The worst trash bag story ever – My daughter was an infant and I had just moved out on my own (separating from my ex husband). I had a separate trash container for my daughter’s diapers. My dear daughter was sick and going through 3-4 poopy diapers an hour. I filled her trash bag and it actually ended up overflowing. I put a pile of paper towels on the top and tried pushing it down and the side of the bag split, leaving exploded diapers all over the floor of my new apartment. Yuck!! No more store brand trash bags for me – ever!

    I am a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair. I have to carry the trash bag outside on my lap. My worst experience occured when I had purchased an inexpensive store brand bag that turned out to be very thin and the drawstring brok when I went to pull the bag closed. I had no choice but to place the bag on my lap and take it out. The bag leaked oll over me and fell off my lap, when it did it broke open and spilled kitchen garbage all over my livingroom. It was awful and it was just a couple of days before Christmas. Not fun at all.

    Trash is one of the worst chorses. Most of the time I have my husband do it. And he doesnt always pay attention. And our trash gets lots of juices/soda cans with extra in them, not to mention left over soup/spaghetti. So ….There have been several times that he will pull out the trash and its leaking, but doesnt notice till he has set the bag down on the white living room floor to open the front door. Then we have a big nasty, stinky color spot by the front door! :(

    Early one morning, on the way to work, I took my trash to the dumpster on the other side of the apartment complex where I was living at the time. Only after I tossed the bag did I realize that on its way, the bag handle had just yanked my keys out of my hand and they were now in the dumpster too! In a panic I ran around to the back of the dumpster and there were my keys, sitting on the edge just within my reach. Whew!

    My worst garbage bag experienced happened when I was taking out the trash one day. I took out the bag, put a new bag in and then proceeded to go to the door. The bag was super heavy so I had to sit it down to open the door. I open the door and then I accidentally kick the trash over spilling it all over the doorway and outside. It was so gross to clean up, it got everywhere! I always tie the bags from now on, lol.

    I’d had about 15 people over for a cookout, and after they left I was taking out the trash when the bottom gave out. You can only imagine the amount of trash in there, and it was gross too (BBQ, potato/macaroni salad, cole slaw, leftover drinks, chicken bones, etc.).

    Of course when it hit the floor, some of it slid everywhere. It probably took me a good 30-40 minutes to get it all cleaned up. *shudder* Never again.

UGH back up the stairs for another bag to pick up trash. Always when you are in a hurry as well.

    Worst garbage bag moment… had to throw away a gallon of ice cream due to power outage, then ice cream oozed out of the bag and through the hole in our garbage can onto the garage floor and seeped under the garage door onto the driveway in the Houston heat.
