What kind of paint do you use for handprint art?
When making handprint art for mother’s day, it’s important to have the right paint. Especially if you want your product to last a long time. First you must answer the question, what medium is the handprint art going on. Once you have determined if you are using wood, paper, or canvas, you can then determine the paint source. You also want to use a non-toxic, organic paint as you are applying it to your child’s hand.
The following paints can be used on the following sources…
Paper or Cardstock: A non-toxic washable tempera paint will easily stick to paper.
Canvas: Acrylic paint labelled non-toxic is safe to use.
Wood: Milk paint is made of natural ingredients making it the safest choice.
Drywall: Choose a non-toxic interior paint commonly found at Home Depot, Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams.
It is important to wash hands (feet/fingers) immediately after the print is created.
Is there a trick to getting handprint art smudge-free?
Getting the perfect handprint can be a challenge. A few tricks to help a smaller child create a handprint without smudging. Follow these five tips when creating kids’ handprint art for mom.
Tip 1: Have the right paint. When using paper, the best paint for easy clean-up is a non-toxic washable tempera paint.
Tip 2: Use distraction. If you can get an adult or older kids to help you, distract the child while you go through the motions of painting their hand and applying it to the paper. If you do not have as second helper, use an electronic or television to quickly deter their eyes.
Tip 3: Give the handprint artwork a few test runs. Print out extra copies of the mother’s day cards and practice with your little hands.
Tip 4: Use a paintbrush to evenly paint on hand and footprints. Remove excess paint before applying the child’s hand to the printable or canvas.
Tip 5: Lay down the hand very slowly and carefully. Start with laying down the pinky and slowly rolling the hand down on the paper until you hit the thumb. Once all the fingers and palm are placed, press your finger tips above the child’s handprint to ensure no part of the child’s hand is not applied to the paper. When you are ready to lift the handprint off, do this in a reverse motion. Slowly peeling the paper back from the child’s hand.
Give yourself grace. Sometimes the most adorable children’s hand prints artwork is found is in the mistakes. Then years down the road, small smudge might remind the gift receiver of a once-upon-a-time wiggly toddler.
