What is the Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas Tradition. The tradition has a book and a elf doll. The book is poetic and in rhyme sharing the purpose of the Elf’s visits. The Elf visits after each Thanksgiving. He/She goes and returns from the North Pole each evening. Every morning he can be found in a new location in the house. The Elf has been found in the refrigerator, fishing in the toilet, writing messages on the mirror or hanging from the lights. It is VERY IMPORTANT, the Elf is not touch each evening or his Christmas magic will be lost! Each family is able to name their special elf.

Is Elf on the Shelf Fake?

Just like Santa Claus, Elf on the Shelf is real for those families that believe. Santa Claus, also known as Kris Kringle or Saint Nicolas, dates all the way back to the 3rd century. Unfortunately, Santa can’t create toys for good boys and girls alone. He needs elves to help build his toys in the workshop and to report to him those boys and girls that have been naughty or nice. If you do not believe in Elf on the Shelf, Christmas magic will likely stop in your home.

How do I get Elf on the Shelf?

If you want an Elf on the Shelf, it is important to ask your parents. An Elf can only be welcomed to the family when a mom, dad or guardian agree. There are many places for where to find an Elf on the Shelf.

Why do we not have an Elf on the Shelf?

In some cases a family is assigned an Elf on the Shelf if Santa has observed naughty behavior during the year. This helps Santa Claus monitor naughty and nice behavior before delivering gifts on Christmas Day. Sometimes kids are already on the nice list and do not have an North Pole Elf in the home.

Why can you buy the Elf on the Shelf?

You can buy the Elf on the Shelf in the store because stores are adoption centers for Elves. In some cases, elves get shipped in boxes and their magic allows them to live there until they are adopted by a family.  Once their family names, them, they have magic to move.

If you are wondering, store bought elves are real! In some other cases, an Elf will just show up at a family’s home and is not a store bought elf. Official Scout Elves comes with a box and book.

Do all Elves look the same?

No, just like people a family Elf can come in different shape, sizes, and colors. Your Elf might look different from your friend’s elf. That is okay. Embrace differences.

If you are wondering if you have the real Elf on the Shelf, as long as your Elf brings Christmas magic to your home, it is real to your family. The official Scout Elf Doll only comes in a box set with the Elf on the Shelf book. You cannot buy the Elf doll alone in the store or online.

When does Elf arrive?

Elf arrives on Thanksgiving or shortly after. There is a long line of Elves waiting to get magic to leave the North Pole. Once your Elf is released from customs he will visit your family as soon as possible.

When does an Elf leave?

The Elf on the Shelf leaves on Christmas Eve for their home, Santa’s North Pole Work shop. They catch a ride in Santa’s sleigh. Don’t worry an Elf on the Shelf will say good-bye on their last night.

Can parents touch Elf on the Shelf?

In the case of emergency, parents can touch Elves. Parents touch do not have as much magic pull as children’s so hopefully magic is not lost. In the case of a real emergency, Elf might not be able to move for a new days.

What happens if Elf falls?

If Elf fall, Elf on the Shelf must not be touched. Use North Pole Magic Grippers to save Elf from the pet dog or getting stepped on.

When does the Elf move?

Elves move at night when boys and girls are sleeping. In cases where an Elf might have fallen asleep before the family, an Elf might have to move during the day. There is a special Elf letter for older kids about moving during the day.

Why didn’t My Elf move?

There are a lot of reasons why Elf on the Shelf didn’t move. These are the most frequent reasons. 1.) Elf was touched and lost his/her magic to return to the North Pole 2.) There was too long of an Elf customs line for Elf to return last night. Santa said stay put. 3.) Elf fell asleep waiting for the kids to fall asleep and fell asleep first. Get to bed on time!

How do you find your elf name?

What are Elf on the Shelf Pets?

Just like humans, not all elves have a pet. Currently there are three Elf on the Shelf pets: a Reindeer, a Saint Bernard Dog and an Arctic Fox. Santa has shared a few of his pets with Elves who have showed amazing behavior or who need emotional support companion. You can learn more about Elf Pets.

Can Elf Pets be touched?

Elf on the Shelf pets can be touched. Unlike Elves, you can play with your Elf pet all season long. The more you hold and play with your Elf pet, the more you create Christmas spirit for Santa to fly on Christmas Eve.

Do Elf Pets go back to the North Pole with Elf on the Shelf or can they stay year round?

Yes, just like Elf on the Shelf, Elf pets return to the North Pole in Santa’s sleigh. When Santa drops off gift son Christmas Eve night, Elf pets and Elf on the Shelf return to their home.

Did you know? Elf on the Shelf was written in 2004 by Carol Aebersold and daughter Chanda Bell over a cup of tea. Bell suggested they write a book about an old tradition of an elf sent from Santa who came to watch over children at Christmas time and share with Santa who has been naughty and nice. Over time, elf ideas have evolved to funny Elf on the Shelf Ideas, Easy Elf on the Shelf Ideas and even Naughty Elf on the Shelf Ideas, but the elf was not created for antics. He was created for the Christmas tradition of an elf visiting his/her assigned family… of course, that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun.
