Before I start this post, I want to tell you about an amazing friend, Heather at Passion for Savings. It was about 10 short weeks from the time Heather found out she had cancer until the time she took her last breath. She left an incredible impact on many in her short life. When I first discovered Heather had cancer, I made these cards immediately. In fact, the photos taken in this blog post of this set on the keychain are actually the Bible verses I sent her in the mail a few short weeks before her passing. (You can do the same, I got the keychain here.) Heather leaves behind a beautiful family including her husband Jonathan, and four precious children. Because I lack the words right not to tell you more about Heather, I will share with you the post I left on my personal Facebook page. I am forever grateful for this 13-year friendship. It will impact me until the day I pass, as well.
When I started blogging in 2008, I didn’t realize the direction it would take me. A little side hobby turned into a small business formed many deep friendships. One of those greatest friendships was with Heather Story Schisler.
Heather and I started our websites at about the same time. I initially found the internet to be very similar to a middle school hall of mean girls. There were few people I trusted outside of a tiny circle of friends.
I remember feeling like I had just entered the cool crowd when I got invited to a Skype room of 20 female bloggers. Heather was in that room and a side chat began. We made plans to hang out at our first conference, BlogHer in 2010. We were instant friends.
Heather’s smile was infectious. She had a love for Jesus. She had so much wisdom, really understood the profession, and was optimistic. She was always trying something new and with success. Often this profession holds secrets because (honestly) we are a bit in competition for real-estate space on the web. Heather and I both understood there was space for us both. I learned so much from her.
At our first conference, people confused us often. While some might find themselves annoyed, I loved it. This girl was amazing and I didn’t even care if they called me Heather. Later, we were identified as a twosome at conferences and Heather was my right-hand girl.
Since that time, Heather and I have been roommates maybe a half dozen times. We would travel to fun cities together nearly double that. Nashville, Chicago, San Diego, New York City, and even my home, Washington D.C. The times I wasn’t sharing a hotel room with her, she gave me the key to crash or drop off my belongings. I belonged. She was my girl.
“I’m starting hospice tomorrow” were some of her last words to me. I knew already but I took comfort in her telling me. I shared a quick message about our shared memories and being an amazing roommate. However, this conversation just felt so backward. An internet friendship with some of the last words about cancer and hospice… ironically shared over a social media platform that had first bonded us.
Yesterday, Heather lost her earthly body and joined Jesus in Heaven. My heart broke but I took peace in her new body. I took peace in that infectious smile entering the gates of Heaven. I took comfort in her relationship with Jesus and her final home.
I love you, Heather. I am thankful for our memories. When they come back I will rotate them into prayer over the Lord’s plans for your precious family. It will be a joyous reunion when we are one day roommates again in Heaven!
Now you know my amazing friend, Heather.
Cancer is a disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It can be a devastating diagnosis, not only for the patient but also for their loved ones. During this difficult cancer diagnosis time, many people turn to their faith for comfort and healing. The word of the Lord is a source of strength and hope for many, and there are numerous Bible verses that offer comfort and encouragement to those who are battling cancer or any illness or disease.
Understanding Cancer Through Bible Verses
Cancer is a complex illness that can be difficult to understand. Many thoughts and questions can run through one’s head when battling a sickness that feels out of control. However, the Holy Bible provides comfort and hope for those who are facing cancer equipping individuals with the power of the Holy Spirit and the truth of the Lord’s word. The following comforting and healing scriptures can help individuals understand cancer from a biblical perspective.
God is Sovereign
One of the most important things to remember when facing cancer is that God is sovereign. He is in control of all things, including cancer. Job 12:10 says, “In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” This verse reminds us that God is the one who holds our lives in his hands. He is the one who gives us breath and sustains us. Therefore, we can trust him even in the midst of cancer to take care of us and our loved ones.
God is Good
Another important truth to remember is that God is good. Psalm 145:9 says, “The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.” This verse reminds us that God is a good and compassionate God. He cares for us and desires our well-being. Even in the midst of cancer, we can trust that God is faithful and that he has our best interests in mind. We are children of God. He is writing an amazing book of our life and this day of trouble is a chapter.
God Provides Comfort
Finally, it is important to remember that God provides comfort to those who are suffering. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” This verse reminds us that God is the source of all comfort. He is our living hope. He is the one who can provide peace and hope in the midst of an illness.
In summary, understanding cancer through a biblical perspective involves recognizing that God is sovereign, that he is good, and that he provides comfort to those who are suffering.
Having the word of God in our hearts acts as a shield and sword. Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that “The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Proverbs 30:5 states “Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” The word of the Lord acts of armor to protect us from attacks from the enemy including worry, fear, and strife.
These truths can provide hope and comfort to those who are facing cancer.
